<p>Wales does walking routes exceptionally well, and the very best ones involve a pub. From wild coastal paths to quietly dramatic valleys, these walks are made for easy-going exploration with maximum reward. Think lungfuls of fresh air, sweeping views, and that unbeatable finish line: a roaring fire or sun-soaked beer garden, a local pint (or glass of bubbly), and something excellent on the menu.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-monmouthshire">MONMOUTHSHIRE</h2>

<p>Nestled in the Wye Valley, The Royal George is positively glowing after a two-year revamp &#8211; and you’re going to love its fresh new look. Original Welsh flagstones, exposed beams and carefully preserved 16th-century details now sit alongside limewashed walls in earthy greens, oranges and creams with tactile woollen furnishings that make you want to linger longer. </p>



<p>From the pub doors, the Angidy Trail is practically on your doorstep &#8211; a five-mile, three-hour circuit weaving together romantic scenery and industrial heritage in equal measure. Head a few hundred yards to the Lower Wireworks and the trail begins, taking you deep into the Angidy Valley, a lush, steep-sided woodland that was once a thriving hub of 16th-century ironworks and wire mills. You’ll pass crumbling limekilns, a tidal dock, old workers’ cottages, and the remains of a 17th century ironworks, all while the Angidy river bubbles alongside you. Expect moody forest atmosphere at every turn, with relics of an industrial past now quietly reclaimed by nature.</p>



<p>Looping back, you’ll pass the atmospheric ruins of St. Mary&#8217;s Church, where generations of metal workers were baptised, married and buried. And then, just like that, you&#8217;re back outside the pub – where a fireside seat, a pint of something local and good on the menu are waiting to complete the picture. And if you haven&#8217;t yet made the short stroll down the road to Tintern Abbey – the magnificent 12th-century Cistercian ruin that’s one of the most romantic sights in Wales &#8211; it&#8217;s well worth adding on afterwards. The perfect full stop to a very good day.</p>

<p>The red-fronted Tŷ Coch inn, perched on the sands at Porthdinllaen, is the very definition of a hidden gem – not least because you can&#8217;t actually drive to it. Unless you happen to be a local resident (or the postie), reaching this idyllic spot – regularly ranked among the best beach bars in the world – means arriving the scenic way: by boat, or on foot along a gloriously beautiful stretch of coast. Tough life.</p>



<p>Start from the National Trust car park in Morfa Nefyn. From here, you’ve got two options: at low tide, wander straight across the beach, or otherwise follow the higher coastal path skirting the edge of the Nefyn &amp; District Golf Club. Either way, the views quickly start showing off, and before long you’ll spot your destination: the peaceful fishing hamlet of Porthdinllaen tucked into its sheltered bay.</p>

<p>If the short 20-minute stroll feels a little too easy, you can stretch things into a satisfying 4-mile circular by continuing past the pub and following the coastal path around the headland , where grey seals are often spotted bobbing around on the rocks below. At the time of writing, the section between Porthdinllaen and the lifeboat hut is closed for safety reasons, so instead of taking the usual route, head up the track behind Tŷ Coch and follow the signed diversion around the headland before rejoining the main trail.</p>



<p>And then comes the reward: a cider outside the Tŷ Coch, cider in hand, toes buried in the sand, panoramic views of the Yr Eifl mountains ahead of you, and the creeping suspicion you’ve stumbled across somewhere a little too good to share.</p>

<p>Just a stone’s throw from Cardiff&#8217;s city centre, the Garth Mountain proves that you don’t need a full day &#8211; or a packed lunch the size of your head &#8211; to feel satisfyingly outdoorsy. At 1,007 feet, it technically just about qualifies as a mountain territory – a fact locals were understandably delighted about, and the very premise behind the 90&#8217;s film <em>The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain</em>, starring Hugh Grant. Stand at the summit and you can decide for yourself: Mountain? Big hill? Either way, the view is worth it.</p>



<p>Most routes begin in Taff&#8217;s Well, where a short, punchy climb gets the legs burning and the excuses flowing (“it’s steeper than it looks” is a popular one). It’s not a <em>super</em> long walk (about three to four miles, and will take you around an hour and a half), but it absolutely earns its pint. From the top, you’re rewarded with wide-open views over the Severn Estuary and, on a clear day, all the way towards the Brecon Beacons. Plus, you&#8217;ll spot the nearby Castell Coch – Cardiff&#8217;s very own answer to Rapunzel&#8217;s tower.</p>



<p>If you’re feeling energetic, you can stretch things out with a longer ridge walk or start further afield from Castell Coch or Pentyrch. But eventually, as all good walks should, this one leads neatly to a pub. Waiting patiently at the bottom is the Gwaelod-y-Garth Inn — ready with a well-earned pint after your “mountain” expedition. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pembrokeshire">PEMBROKESHIRE</h2>

<p>If you like a walk that keeps things interesting, the National Trust Stackpole route is a very solid choice. Cliffs, beaches, dunes and lakes are all packed into one outing, with plenty of excuses to stop every five minutes and &#8220;just take in the view&#8221;.</p>



<p>Start from the car park at Stackpole Quay and follow the coast path. It doesn&#8217;t take long before you reach Barafundle Bay &#8211; a huge stretch of golden sand that looks far too good to be real. Try not to linger too long though, because there&#8217;s plenty more to come.</p>



<p>The route then curves around to Stackpole Head, where dramatic cliffs and circling seabirds steal the show, before things soften as the path loops inland towards the Bosherston Lakes. Suddenly, everything feels calmer. Think still water, lily pads and a gentler pace whether you intended it or not. Keep an eye out for otters near the Eight Arch Bridge too — no guarantees, naturally, but it’s one of the best spots if they’re feeling sociable.</p>



<p>At around six miles, it’s long enough to feel like a proper walk without tipping into “whose idea was this?” territory. Allow around four hours, or longer if you’re prone to scenic distractions.</p>



<p>And then comes the reward. A short detour leads to the Stackpole Inn, a handsome 17th-century pub with an excellent reputation for food. Ideal after a few hours of fresh air.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-snowdonia">SNOWDONIA</h2>

<p>Start in Beddgelert, one of the prettiest villages in Snowdonia, with a legend to match. Best known for the tale of Prince Llywelyn and his faithful hound, Gelert, the village is home to Gelert&#8217;s Grave just outside the centre &#8211; well worth a quick detour before setting off. The walk heads towards the Aberglaslyn Pass, covering around six miles and taking roughly three to four hours. It begins gently through woodland before following the river into scenery that quickly shifts from lovely to properly jaw-dropping. By the time you reach the pass itself, By the time you reach the pass itself, the landscape tightens dramatically into steep rock walls, rushing water and towering scenery — all the wow factor, without an enormous climb.</p>



<p>It’s an easy route to settle into too, with enough variation to keep things interesting: shaded woodland, open stretches and then the main event through the gorge itself. One of those walks where you spend most of the time quietly thinking, “this is actually quite magical.”</p>



<p>Back in the village, the Prince Llewelyn Hotel is exactly where you&#8217;ll want to end up. Sitting beside the Afon Colwyn with views towards the surrounding hills, including Moel Hebog, it’s the ideal reward after a few hours on the trail. Expect good food, plenty of local produce and a delicious Snowdon cheeseboard &#8211; plus every reason to settle in far longer than originally intended.</p>
