The chance to spot an otter? Frankly better than most Christmas presents (diamonds aside, obviously). This Boxing Day walk is packed with little wow moments you&#8217;ll want to share with the whole family. One minute you’re crossing the Eight Arch Bridge, eyes peeled for those cute, shy river residents; the next you’re nosing at the weirdly wonderful Lattice Windows in the the tiny village of Bosherston before rounding things off with a glorious stroll along the sands of Barafundle Bay.

Starting point:&nbsp;Knap Terrace car park



Expect a mix of grassy paths and narrow trails on this one, so sensible shoes are a very good idea, especially near the Golden Steps, where things can get gloriously muddy and a little slippery underfoot. En route, you’ll pass the Gorsedd Stones, meander through Romilly Gardens, and skirt the beautifully harp-shaped lake, home to ducks and swans galore (dogs firmly on leads here, please). Finish up at The Knap &#8211; known locally as the Pebbles &#8211; or Watchtower Bay, both framed by pretty flowerbeds and an excellent cluster of independent coffee shops, primed for a post-walk refuel. Proper Boxing Day strolling, nailed.

Starting point:&nbsp;Foresters’ Oaks and Cadira Beeches car parks



Once the private back garden of Chepstow Castle, Wentwood Forest is now a dreamy wander for dog walkers and Sunday ramblers alike. Expect sweeping views across the Severn Estuary, plus a woodland straight out of a forager&#8217;s fantasy &#8211; fly agaric, chanterelles and all. Add in over 70 species of bird, 23 types of butterfly and the wonderfully ancient Curley Oak, and you&#8217;ve got a walk that feeds the soul. If you craving a reset after the festive frenzy, this is very much for you. You&#8217;ll find Wentwood Forest around five miles north of Llanfair Discoed, nestled between Newport and Chepstow &#8211; and it&#8217;s worth every step.

The Garth is Cardiff’s honarary mountain. OK, so it&#8217;s not technically a mountain (as detailed in Hugh Grant&#8217;s 90s classic The Englishman Who Went up a Hill but Came down a Mountain), but don&#8217;t let that put you off. The cracking views across Cardiff, Caerphilly and right out to the Bristol Channel more than hold their own. It&#8217;s an easy, family-friendly hike with just enough puff on the way up to feel virtuous &#8211; ideal for first-time explorers and kids burning with post-Christmas energy. Even better? There&#8217;s a cosy pub pitstop en route. Motivating, we&#8217;d say.

Sgwd yr Eira is one of those Welsh walks that genuinely makes you stop mid-step and go wow. Tucked away near Ystradfellte in the Brecon Beacons, this magical trail winds through atmospheric woodland and rocky paths before revealing its headline act: a thundering waterfall you can actually walk behind &#8211; one of the very few in the UK where that&#8217;s possible. Waterproofs non-negotiable, camera essential.

Sirhowy Valley Country Park is brilliantly choose-your-own adventure. Fancy an easy wander to loosen up after Christmas? Stick to the wide, flat riverside paths &#8211; perfect for a gentle stroll or a relaxed cycle. Feeling a bit more ambitious? Head uphill into the woods, where longer routes climb the valley sides and reward you with beautiful open views. Along the way you&#8217;ll pass the Grade II listed Babell Chapel and the old Penllwyn Tramroad Bridge, spot birds flitting through the trees and find plenty of space to properly stretch your legs. Ideal whether you’ve got an hour to spare before tackling the Boxing Day ham, or a whole day to get lost in (in a good way).

Cadair Idris &#8211; or Idris&#8217;s Chair &#8211; is one of the three peaks which make up the Welsh Three Peaks, and it&#8217;s not here to mess about. This is a proper mountain walk: boots on, lungs working, legs reminding you it&#8217;s Christmas. Sitting near Dolgellau on the southern edge of Snowdonia, it’s often far calmer than Snowdon’s busier paths, making it a cracking choice for hikers who want a challenge without the crowd. Big skies, serious scenery, and that quietly triumphant feeling when you reach the top. A total corker.

Cefn Onn Park in Lisvane is a leafy little gem on the edge of North Cardiff that somehow still feels like a secret. This Grade II listed park is perfect for relaxed wandering among woodlands, streams, and ponds, with plenty of chances to spot local wildlife. Much of it is buggy-friendly, and the trails link up with footpaths onto Caerphilly Mountain, if you fancy extending the adventure. Easy, peaceful and quietly lovely.
