<p>One of the Seven Wonders of Wales, Pistyll Rhaeadr plunges 73m (240ft) in three dramatic stages down a cliff face in the Berwyn Mountains &#8211; and it&#8217;s every bit as spectacular as that sounds. </p>



<p>The best part? You can walk this waterfall entirely your way. If you’re in the mood for an easy win (no judgement here), park up at the charming Tan-y-Pistyll tearoom, grab a coffee and something indulgent, and take a short, scenic stroll straight to the base &#8211; all the drama, very little effort. </p>



<p>Feeling more energetic? A&nbsp;3-mile circuit crosses the foot of the falls and winds back through old quarry heaps and open hillside.&nbsp;&nbsp;And if you really want to earn your cake? There are longer, steeper routes that climb alongside the falls and up into the mountains, where the crowds thin out and the views only get better.</p>

<p>Four waterfalls for the price of one walk? Yes please. Winding through the lush wooded gorges of the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, the Four Falls Trail is where Waterfall Country packs four spectacular cascades into one enchanted, woodland-scented walk. Allow at least three hours – this is not a trail to rush. And wear sturdy boots with a good grip – it’s steep&nbsp;in places and can be muddy and slippery.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Arrive early at the Cwm Porth Car Park or Gwaun Hepste Car Park – they fill up faster than a pub garden on a sunny Sunday. Then start your walk with the dramatic, wide Niagara-style curtain drop of Sgwd Clun-Gwyn before moving on to the staircase of Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn. Next, you’ll pass the graceful ribbons of Sgwd y Pannwr (waterfall of the woollen washer), whose name nods to its past life as a wool-washing spot, natch. </p>



<p>Then, saved for last, it&#8217;s the star of the show: Sgwd yr Eira (the waterfall of snow), where a rough path lets you walk behind the thundering curtain of water itself. You will get wet. You will not regret it. Just pack a waterproof jacket and embrace it. After conquering the inclines and getting your fill of mist, head back to the Cwm Porth kiosk for a well-earned snack.</p>

<p>The Watkin Path has a reputation for being one of the most challenging routes up Yr Wyddfa – but relax, you’re only doing a flirty little 3-mile there-and-back trek along the lower section. So you can soak up the magic of the mountain without worrying about dizzying, nail-splitting scrambles or steep drops. Just beauty (without the breathlessness). Start at Pont Bethania Car Park and, and if you&#8217;re making an early morning of it, do yourself a favour and nip across the road to Caffi Gwynant – a dreamy converted chapel that’s just perfect for&nbsp;a pre-hike caffeine fix.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The beginning of the trail is pure woodland enchantment. Then the path climbs gently to an old tramway and suddenly… boom. Waterfalls.&nbsp;&nbsp;One after another. Cascading into crystal-clear pools that practically demand a photoshoot (or a dip if you’re brave). On a sunny day, they glow turquoise and look suspiciously like you’ve wandered far from Wales. So yes, feel free to bring your bathers on a sunny day &#8211; but be sensible: the water is freezing year-round, conditions can turn dangerous after heavy rain (so skip the swim then), and always check depths and avoid jumping into unknown or deep pools.&nbsp;</p>



<p>With wide-reaching views and one wow moment after another, this short stretch of the Watkin Path delivers Alpine-style drama &#8211; no lung-busting effort required.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Who knew that the River Severn begins its life as a peat bog on the slopes of Pumlumon in Mid Wales? By the time it reaches Hafren Forest, it’s found its feet and is cascading and plunging through the landscape. The good news? You can catch all the drama without breaking a sweat, because there are walks here to suit absolutely everyone. Parking is free at Rhyd-y-benwch car park, and from there the trails are waymarked so you won&#8217;t end up lost in the conifers, wondering where it all went wrong.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The Cascades Walk is just 0.6 miles (0.9km), takes about 30 minutes, and follows a buggy-friendly boardwalk along the riverbank to tumbling cascades and a raised viewing platform. Feeling slightly more energetic? The Severn-Break-its-Neck Trail (kudos to whoever thought that name up) is 1.4 miles (2.3km) and takes you through meadow and woodland before crossing a footbridge where the river thunders down a rocky gully into the famous waterfall below.&nbsp;</p>



<p>And if you really want to commit, the Blaen Hafren Falls Trail covers 3.8 miles (6km) through the forest, while the full Source of the Severn Trail goes the whole 8.1 miles (13km) to Pumlumon itself, where a carved wooden post marks the mighty river&#8217;s rather humble beginnings in a boggy field. Oh, and keep an eye out for ospreys (the birds, not the handbags).</p>

<p>Like your waterfalls with a side of drama? How about&nbsp;<em>Hollywood</em>&nbsp;drama?&nbsp;Henrhyd Falls&nbsp;is a total class act, starring as the entrance to the Batcave in The Dark Knight Rises. But that’s not its only accolade &#8211; it’s also officially the tallest waterfall in South Wales, plunging an impressive 90ft into a deep, echoing pool below.&nbsp;</p>



<p>From the National Trust car park&nbsp;near Coelbren, it’s a short but steep wander down through woodland before you arrive in a lush, Jurassic style gorge and the falls reveal themselves in full cinematic glory. Wonderfully, you can walk right behind the curtain of water – just expect a faceful of spray after heavy rainfall. But that’s half the fun of it.&nbsp;</p>



<p>If you want to make a longer day of it, the full Nant Llech circular walk is 3.5 miles (5.6 km), following the river valley past smaller cascades and the atmospheric remains of a disused watermill. Superhero walk. Done.</p>

<p>Big, bold, and ridiculously easy to get to, Aber Falls is the ultimate crowd-pleaser. Tucked into the foothills of the Carneddau mountains in Eryri, this 120ft cascade crashes dramatically down the rocky mountainside – yet getting there is a breezy 2-3 mile there-and-back stroll on a wide, well-marked pushchair-friendly path. Easy, much?&nbsp;</p>



<p>The route meanders through a dreamy mix of Celtic rainforest and open grassland, with mountain views doing their thing in the background, before the sound of rushing water builds to the main event: a full-on, straight-out-of-a-postcard magical waterfall moment.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Final tip?&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aberfallsdistillery.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Aber Falls Distillery</a>&nbsp;is just a short drive away, where you can take an hourly tour and taste their whisky at the onsite bar. A waterfall and a dram. Absolute legend territory.</p>
