If the kids are getting a bit&nbsp;too&nbsp;much screen time and you&#8217;ve had enough of the endless onslaught of Hallmark Christmas films, we&#8217;ve got just the thing. For the fifth year running,&nbsp;<a href="https://christmasatbutepark.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Christmas at Bute Park</a>&nbsp;is back to turn your dark, chilly evening walk into a glittering, mile long wonderland.</p>

<p>A mere hop, skip and a jump from the main shopping streets of Cardiff, and in the city centre Bute Park is a hotspot year-round with locals and visitors alike. These aren&#8217;t just lights in a park, it&#8217;s a trail full blown luminous fantasy crafted by actual world-leading lighting designers (yes, they exist, and yes, they’ve gone&nbsp;<em>all out</em>). You&#8217;ll wander past Cardiff Castle and take a journey through 15 jaw dropping light zones that shimmer, sparkle and occasionally make you whisper “okay wow, this was worth it” to yourself. Clear out your storage – you&#8217;ll need plenty of space for photos.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE </h2>



<p>Amidst the madness of the pre-Christmas frenzy, Bute Park is pleasantly calm and tranquil, with enough space to move around at your own glacial pace, yet enough people bringing up the rear for it to have a buzzy, festive atmosphere. It&#8217;s extremely twinkly, so be prepared for bright lights and movement, but there&#8217;s nothing so flashy that you&#8217;ll need sunglasses.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-best-bits">THE BEST BITS </h2>



<p>Wales’s largest light trail, Christmas at Bute Park features a reimagined route filled with a mix of returning favourites and new designs when it comes to installations. Water willow is one of this year&#8217;s showstoppers, featuring an enchanting tree that glitters with thousands of bulbs, a glowing trunk and twinkling raindrops hanging from its branches. Children will no doubt be enamoured with Delilah y ddraig, because what is a Welsh installation without a mythical dragon? Some of the new installations include crystal avenue, icefall and yuletide magic.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoff-amp-quaff">SCOFF &amp; QUAFF</h2>



<p>Teaming up with Togather Events, Christmas at Bute Park has got all your foodie needs covered – and we&#8217;re not talking sad burgers in a bun. Working with fantastic local street food traders, the event has a Christmas village at its heart. Expect to find pizza, loaded hash browns, chocolatey treats, authentic German bratwurst, mac &#8216;n&#8217; cheese, and warm, buttery and customisable crumble pots. Plus, there&#8217;s the Bute Park Tavern, an Alpine style cosy cabin that&#8217;s serving up classic favourites, hot chocolates, seasonal cocktails and mulled wine. You&#8217;ll pass the Christmas village at the start and end of your walk, so you can either set out for a slightly wobbly mulled wine-laden walk, or, play it safe and wait until the end. Midway around the trail, you&#8217;ll also stumble upon a marshmallow toasting station – they come in packs of three, but we&#8217;re not sharing.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



<p>Good news for anyone who loves festive magic but not, you know, cardio,&nbsp;Christmas at Bute Park&nbsp;is a mile long trail that takes just over an hour and involves&nbsp;zero&nbsp;huffing and puffing. The route is flat, smooth and wonderfully fuss free, making it an easy wander for wheelchairs, buggies, tired legs and sugar crashed children alike. If the charm of panto glitter has worn off, the Quality Street tin is looking suspiciously empty, and everyone just needs some crisp winter air and twinkly escapism, this is the ticket. It’s the ideal post shopping decompression, and the festive reset button you didn’t know you needed.</p>



<p><strong>Good for:</strong> Families, large groups, and those who love to see and chat at the same time.</p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong> Outdoor-phobes, Grinches who just can&#8217;t get into the Christmas spirit, and kids who prefer something more interactive.</p>
