And with so many of Wales&#8217; beaches regularly ranked among the best in the world — not to mention a healthy collection of Blue Flag winners — you’re seriously spoiled for choice.</p>



<p>Whether you’re after vast stretches of golden sand for family beach days, hidden coves that feel a world away from it all, or storied shores steeped in legend, Wales has a seaside spot for every mood. From dolphin spotting bays to surfer favourites and star-filled skies once the sun goes down, here&#8217;s our starter for ten of the beaches worth planning your weekend around. <p>Often described as one of Wales’ most beautiful beaches &#8211; and honestly, it’s hard to disagree &#8211; Barafundle Bay feels like a hidden gem from the moment you set off. Reached only on foot via the Stackpole Estate, the short cliffside walk is all part of the appeal, making that first glimpse of sweeping golden sand and crystal-clear turquoise water feel even more rewarding.</p>



<p>Tucked between dunes and backed by woodland bursting with wild garlic and bluebells in spring, it’s easy to see why the bay is so often compared to somewhere far more tropical. There are no facilities here, which is part of the charm, but it does mean packing smart (and saving some energy for the climb back up). Thankfully, The Stackpole Inn isn’t far away, ready and waiting for sandy feet, salty hair and a very well-earned post-beach pint.</p>

<p>Tucked away on the western edge of Aberdaron, Porth Meudwy is a small, sheltered cove with a deep-rooted ties to the sea. For centuries, this was the departure point for pilgrims making the crossing to Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island), and that rich sense of history still lingers in the salty air today.</p>



<p>This is more a cove than classic sandy beach — somewhere to perch with a picnic and watch the world drift by rather than stretch out for a full day of sunbathing. Fishing boats still launch from the shore, with local fishermen heading out for lobster and crab, giving the cover a quietly industrious charm. And if you&#8217;re walking the Wales Coast Path, it’s well worth lingering here. This corner of the Llŷn Peninsula is rich in wildlife, offering the chance to spot the local &#8216;Big 5&#8217;: grey seals, porpoises, hares, choughs, and even peregrine falcons wheeling overhead.</p>

<p>Just north of Cardigan, Mwnt is a sheltered bay of golden sand and rolling waves, and a firm favourite for family beach days. The approach alone is wonderfully cinematic, with narrow country lanes suddenly giving way to sweeping views across Cardigan Bay, before a short walk down a series of steps to the beach (or a scenic arrival via the Wales Coast Path).</p>



<p>Mwnt is also one of the best spots in the region for wildlife watching. Dolphins are regularly seen playing in the bay, while the coastline is just as spectacular from above. A climb up Foel y Mwnt is more than worth the effort, rewarding walkers with panoramic sea views stretching all the way to Snowdonia on a clear day. There are toilets and an ice cream kiosk on site &#8211; always a win. Just bear in mind that during seal breeding season (Aug to Dec), you may spot fluffy white seal pups resting on beaches or rocky outcrops nearby – often on their own. However tempting it is to get closer, it&#8217;s important to keep your distance as mum is likely close by.</p>

<p>Stretching for three glorious miles along the Gower Peninsula, Rhosili Bay is one of Wales’ most iconic stretches of coastline &#8211; and for very good reason. Time your visit with low tide and you might catch a glimpse of the Helvetia – a shipwreck that has lain in the sand since 1887, slowly reappearing as the sea retreats. It’s a rare sight that adds a little extra magic.</p>



<p>Up on the cliffs, a gentle walk from the visitor centre leads towards the Old Coastguard Lookout, with sweeping coastal views the entire way. Look out for grazing sheep and the area&#8217;s famous red-beaked choughs, often seen swooping along the cliffs. Behind the beach, wildflower meadows burst into colour through the warmer months, drawing in bees and butterflies by the dozen. And for dog owners? Even better — Rhossili welcomes four-legged beachgoers year-round, meaning sandy paws are very much encouraged.</p>

<p>Recognise the setting of Shell Cottage from <em>Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows</em>? This is it. Freshwater West’s wide, windswept shoreline played host to one of the series’ most memorable scenes (we’re still not over Dobby, frankly), and even without the set, it still feels cinematic. It&#8217;s also appeared on screen in <em>Robin Hood</em>.</p>



<p>Beyond its Hollywood credentials, Freshwater West is one of the best surfing beaches in the county. Facing south-west, it picks up powerful Atlantic swells that attract experienced surfers from far and wide. Strong rip currents mean it’s not the place for beginners, but it’s a brilliant spot to watch the action when the waves are rolling in. The beach itself is backed by an extensive system of dunes that give it a raw, untouched feel. Be aware, though – these are protected, so no camping or barbecues, but there’s still plenty of space to explore, from rocky reefs at one end to quieter stretches of sand at the other.</p>

<p>Timing really is everything at Mewslade Bay. At high tide, the beach almost disappears completely beneath crashing waves and towering cliffs. Catch it at the right moment, though, and you’ll discover a beautiful stretch of sand tucked away at the end of a peaceful valley on the Gower Peninsula. Reached via a short walk from Pitton near Rhossili, the route winds through woodland and open valley before revealing one of the prettiest hidden coves on the coast. The path can be uneven — and decidedly muddy after rain — so it’s better suited to walkers than pushchairs. bays on the Gower Peninsula.</p>



<p>With its sloping cliffs and wonderfully unspoilt feel, Mewslade is a favourite with families, surfers and bodyboarders alike, without ever feeling too busy. At very low tide, you can even explore further along the coast towards Fall Bay for an extra dose of seaside adventure. Better still, dogs are welcome all year round, making it ideal for a scenic stomp with a beach break built in.</p>

<p>Tucked between Tresaith and Llangrannog, Penbryn Beach is linked by the Wales Coast Path and a network of peaceful, wooded lanes that make the journey feel just as lovely as the destination.&nbsp;Owned by the National Trust, it’s a vast sandy beach that somehow still manages to feel wonderfully unspoilt. A short walk through the valley opens out onto a wide sweep of sand framed by dunes and rugged cliffs. It’s popular with surfers and kayakers, but there’s more than enough room for slower-paced beach days too — whether that means stretching out with a book or setting off on a long coastal walk.</p>



<p>The surrounding coastline forms part of the Cardigan Bay Special Area of Conservation, so wildlife spotting comes with the territory. Bottlenose dolphins are regularly seen offshore, while the waters are rich with marine life. Stay a little longer and you’ll see a different side to Penbryn. Thanks to minimal light pollution, it’s recognised as a Dark Skies Discovery Site, making it a brilliant spot for stargazing on clear nights.</p>

<p>Few beaches can rival the backdrop at Harlech Beach. Towering above the vast sweep of sand, Harlech Castle keeps watch over the coastline, adding a seriously dramatic edge to your average beach day. Down on the shore, it’s all about the sense of space. The huge stretch of flat sand is perfect for everything from paddling and picnics to long, easy walks, while the surrounding dunes add an extra layer of wild beauty. Protected as part of a National Nature Reserve, the landscape feels wonderfully peaceful and unspoilt.</p>



<p>On clear days, you can see right across to the Llŷn Peninsula, with the peaks of Snowdonia rising in the distance. And if you&#8217;re not ready to leave? There&#8217;s a nearby café and shop, plus the renowned Royal St David’s Golf Club for anyone tempted to swap sandy toes for a round on the fairway.</p>
