<p>The summer solstice arrives this weekend &#8211; <strong>Sun 21 June</strong>, which means one glorious thing: the longest day of the year is finally here. Expect endless daylight, golden-hour selfies that require absolutely no filter and a sudden urge to spend every waking minute outdoors while the Welsh weather is playing nicely. </p>



<p>Whether you&#8217;re a sunrise chaser, a sunset devotee or simply looking for an excuse to unfurl a picnic blanket somewhere gorgeous, the solstice is the perfect moment to get out and celebrate. Here are some of the most beautiful spots in Wales to soak up every last minute of it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-castell-dinas-bran-llangollen">Castell Dinas Brân, Llangollen</h2>

<p>High above the Dee Valley and Llangollen, Castell Dinas Brân is the sort of dramatic hilltop ruin that practically demands a summer solstice visit. The climb to the summit may get your calves complaining, but the payoff is worth every step: sweeping views across the valley, a ruined medieval fortress and enough history to keep even the most reluctant heritage buff happy.</p>



<p>As the longest day of the year unfolds, this lofty perch comes into its own, with the evening light lingering over the landscape below. Throw in tales of Princess Myfanwy Fychan, Norman knights and legendary giants, and you&#8217;ve got all the ingredients for a properly magical solstice spot.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pentre-ifan-burial-chamber-newport">Pentre Ifan burial chamber, Newport</h2>



<p>A Neolithic burial chamber in the Preseli Hills, Pentre Ifan is one of those places that makes you stop and stare. Three towering stones support an enormous capstone that appears to be defying the laws of physics, yet it’s been standing firm for more than 5,000 years.</p>



<p>Originally hidden beneath an earthen mound, the ancient tomb now sits proudly beneath open skies, with the Preseli mountains providing a rather spectacular backdrop. Visit around the summer solstice and the atmosphere is even more magical. Made from the same bluestone associated with Stonehenge, it&#8217;s no surprise this prehistoric wonder draws plenty of fellow solstice seekers each year.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-st-lythan-s-burial-chamber-cardiff">St Lythan’s burial chamber, Cardiff</h2>

<p>Just outside Cardiff, St Lythans Burial Chamber is a staggering 6,000 years old, meaning it predates both Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids – yes, really. Part of a long barrow aligned east to west, it was carefully positioned so that, at key moments in the year, the rising sun would shine directly into the chamber. The mind fairly boggles.</p>



<p>Today, a huge capstone still balances atop three upright stones, creating a striking silhouette against the surrounding farmland. Visit on or around the summer solstice and it&#8217;s not hard to see why this place held such significance for our Neolithic ancestors. Goosebumps guaranteed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-rocking-stone-pontypridd">The Rocking Stone, Pontypridd</h2>



<p>Perched on Coedpenmaen Common above Pontypridd, the Rocking Stone (Y Maen Chwyf) is a giant Ice Age boulder with a surprisingly colourful backstory. Left behind by retreating glaciers thousands of years ago, it has long been a focal point for local gatherings, folklore and the occasional bit of mystery.</p>



<p>In the 19th century, poets and druids gathered here for bardic ceremonies, later adding a ring of smaller stones around the boulder to mark the spot. These days it&#8217;s a highlight of the Pontypridd Circular Walk, but local whispers persist that the stone may still move ever so slightly during rare celestial events. Whether you believe the legends or not, it certainly adds to the atmosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rhossili-bay-gower">Rhossili Bay, Gower</h2>

<p>Wales has no shortage of incredible coastline, but Rhossili Bay on the Gower Peninsula rightly steals the spotlight. Once voted the best beach in Europe and ranked among the top 10 in the world, it’s 2.8 miles of pure beauty.</p>



<p>Backed by Rhossili Downs and framed by rugged cliffs that fall away into open sea, it&#8217;s a gorgeous spot to set up camp for summer solstice. At its western edge, Worms Head juts out like a sea serpent, connected to the mainland by a tidal causeway only passable around low tide. Time it right and you might even spot the famous cliff horses running with the wind — spotting them against the backdrop of a solstice sunset is the kind of moment you&#8217;ll be talking about all summer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cribyn-brecon-beacons">Cribyn, Brecon Beacons</h2>



<p>At 795 metres, Cribyn may sit in the shadow of Pen y Fan on paper, but don&#8217;t underestimate it. With its dramatic ridges and sweeping panoramas across the Bannau Brycheiniog landscape, this peak more than holds its own.</p>



<p>As the sun begins to sink, the surrounding mountains are bathed in golden light, with far-reaching vistas across the Usk Valley and towards Corn Du and Pen y Fan. Better still, it&#8217;s often noticeably quieter than its famous neighbour, leaving you with a little more room to savour the moment — and a lot less competition for the best photo.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bryn-celli-ddu-llanedwen">Bryn Celli Ddu, Llanedwen</h2>

<p>There’s a reason people flock to Bryn Celli Ddu on the summer solstice. As the sun rises on the longest day of the year, a shaft of light travels deep into the ancient chamber, briefly illuminating its inner passage in a spectacular display that&#8217;s been repeated for thousands of years.</p>



<p>Known as the Mound in the Dark Grove, Bryn Celli Ddu is one of Anglesey&#8217;s most fascinating prehistoric sites. Part burial chamber, part henge monument, it carries an air of mystery all year round — but on the solstice, when ancient engineering and nature come together in perfect alignment, it feels particularly magical.</p>
