From Michelin-starred blowouts perched practically on the beach to brilliant bistros and seaside pubs serving the day’s catch fresh from the bay, Wales has the whole eat-by-the-sea thing nailed. So whether you’re after an eight-course tasting menu with serious wow factor, a post-swim fish feast or oysters and something very cold and fizzy on a sunny terrace, these are the coastal tables worth hotfooting it to this summer. Race you to the best seat.</p>

<p>Beach House is about as close to the sea as you can get without actually getting your feet wet. Sitting right on Oxwich Bay, this Michelin-starred restaurant has huge windows framing the Gower coastline and a terrace made for long, lazy lunches when the Welsh weather plays ball. Chef Head chef Hywel Griffith makes the most of Welsh ingredients, with a menu that changes with the seasons and plenty coming from the Gower and surrounding coastline. If you’re celebrating something, book here. If you’re not, frankly, book here anyway. For the full works, go for the eight-course tasting menu at £142, or the weekday lunch special consists of three courses for £78 – and nab a table with a view if you can.</p>

<p>Fresh from a dip and suddenly ravenous? Lan y Môr sits just above Coppet Hall Beach, hitting that sweet spot between beachy and polished – smart enough for date night, but relaxed enough for lunch after a morning on the sand, with beautiful floor to ceiling windows and a stunning view. The Pembrokeshire oysters with orange and malt vinegar mignonette have our name all over them, followed by Saundersfoot Harbour lobster with tandoori butter, lime pickle mayonnaise and pitas. The team consists of Hywel Griffith, the man behind Michelin-starred Beach House in the Gower, with former Head Chef at award-winning Grove of Narberth, Gerwyn Jones –&nbsp;not your standard bucket-and-spade lunch, then. But, dining here is a fraction of the price, with a regular a la carte menu – a seabass with leeks, miso and butter beans will set you back £26. </p>

<p>Sandy walk followed by a slap-up lunch? Now you’re talking. A few minutes from Rhosneigr’s Broad Beach, The Oystercatcher is the kind of place where a quick post-beach bite can rather easily turn into an epic foodie event that you never want to end. We’d make a beeline for the loaded shrimp crackers with Vietnamese pork belly and crispy pork scratchings, but the most popular dish is the battered catch of the day with thick-cut chips, mushy peas and charred lemon. The restaurant is part of Flock Inns, owned by the Timpson family (yes, the same family behind the cobbling key cutters), and they love to work with young and budding chefs. If you visit when it&#8217;s a bit nippy, ask to sit in one of the heated beach huts, so you don&#8217;t have to miss out on the view.</p>

<p>Come for lunch, stay gawping at the view. Dylan’s original restaurant sits right on the Menai Strait, with the water and Thomas Telford’s magnificent Menai Suspension Bridge providing a fairly distracting backdrop to proceedings from almost every table. The boatyard-inspired interiors nod to its coastal setting, but the real star is the menu, fresh seafood, warm baked breads, and Welsh produce from the land and sea around Anglesey. We&#8217;d order the Anglesey seared scallops with piccalilli, pea puree and parma ham crisp, or the sea bream tacos. No table here is a bad one, but we&#8217;d ask to sit out on the sun terrace and feel that warm sea breeze wash up.</p>



<p>Save room – or at least some boot space – because afterwards you can pop into Dylan’s General Store, just next door, and stock up on Welsh goodies to take home. Holiday souvenir calories don’t count. Fact.</p>

<p>Now&nbsp;<em>this</em>&nbsp;is one for serious seafood lovers. The Griffin has been sitting behind Dale’s sea wall for some 300 years, but the real reason to hotfoot it here is what’s being pulled from the water on its doorstep. Local lobster is the star, caught from pots in the bay and brought ashore nearby – if your timing is right, you might even see the day’s catch arriving from the outdoor terrace (it&#8217;s dog friendly, by the way). Fresh doesn’t get much fresher than that. Danny in Little Haven and Mark from LilyMay in&nbsp;Dale supply&nbsp;the restaurant with locally caught fresh&nbsp;lobster, crab, and sea bass using one of 200 pots, along with Atlantic Edge Oysters from just across the bay. You don&#8217;t need to pre-order, but lobster does sell out on busy days.</p>

<p>A beach walk followed by Bryn Williams’ fish pie for two! Consider our afternoon sorted. Sitting right on the seafront at Porth Eirias, this relaxed bistro makes Welsh seafood the star, from prawns and mussels to simply cooked catch of the day.</p>



<p>On a sunny day, bag a spot on the dog-friendly terrace (no reservations) overlooking the shore and arrive hungry enough to tackle that fish pie – it&#8217;s £39.20 and pretty whopping. Can&#8217;t get in? All is not lost: swing by the takeaway café for a fish-finger bap and eat it by the sea instead. Very acceptable Plan B.</p>

<p>If your ideal summer lunch involves seafood, cold fizz and a terrace within flip-flopping distance of the sea, The Potted Lobster should be firmly on your radar – it&#8217;s 10 minutes from the beautiful Abersoch Beach. The menu goes big on the good stuff from the sea, but it&#8217;s pretty family friendly too, with a great kids menu. The obvious order? The potted lobster with brown shrimp, crab and crayfish – because coming to a restaurant called The Potted Lobster and not ordering lobster would show frankly heroic restraint. Even the little ones can have their own –&nbsp;locally caught with fries, citrus aioli and salad (now that beats chicken nuggets). Book well in advance for weekends, or if you&#8217;re without a reservation, try a Wednesday or Thursday for the best availability.</p>
