<p>Let’s be honest, Cardiff does picnic culture very well. On a blazing hot sunny day, you&#8217;re spoilt for choice, with cafés, bars and local producers across the city offering everything from takeaway picnic boxes and deli hampers to beautifully arranged grazing boards and bottles of wine chilled and ready to pop. </p>



<p>And the best part is you don&#8217;t have to go far to enjoy it. Pick up your spread in the city centre, then head to one of Cardiff’s many green spaces, where shaded lawns, river views and wide open spaces do the talking. Add a chilled drink, find a patch of sun, and you have yourself one of the best summer days in the capital.</p>

<p>A gloriously traditional picnic for the peak of British summer. Each box from the living museum comes with a generous Welsh selection of freshly made sandwiches, homemade scones with Welsh clotted cream and fruit jam, plus Welsh Jones Crisps. For dessert, you&#8217;ll get a chocolate brownie, a slice of St Fagans’ loved bara brith served with Welsh salted butter, and your choice of Welsh Brew Tea or a Hard Lines Americano to take away with you.</p>



<p><strong>Where to eat</strong>: Take your picnic to the <a href="https://museum.wales/stfagans/castle-and-gardens/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Castle Gardens</a> and listen to the birds sing. We like to pretend we live there –&nbsp;no shame.</p>

<p>If cheese is your main food group, listen up!&nbsp;The Welsh Cheese Company&nbsp;brings together produce from more than 18 artisan cheesemakers across the country, celebrating the very best Welsh cheese. Their takeaway cheese and charcuterie boards are made for picnics, packed with three Welsh cheeses, Trealy Farm charcuterie, chutney, crackers, fruit and pickles. It’s an easy grab-and-go option for a sunny afternoon in the park and a much more indulgent alternative to your usual lunch.</p>



<p>And, if you fancy finishing on a sweet note, it&#8217;s well worth heading next door to <a href="https://www.letthemseecake.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Let Them See Cake</a> for something from the counter as well.</p>



<p><strong>Where to eat</strong>: Head straight across the road to <a href="https://www.outdoorcardiff.com/parks/victoria-park/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Victoria Park</a>, and let the little ones frolic in the splash park.</p>

<p>Hoffi Coffi, one of Cathays’ best loved roasteries, also has a little surprise up its sleeve for summer – you can pick up beer and wine to takeaway, and not in a slightly mood dampening paper cup either. So, if you’re planning a picnic in the sunshine on the City Hall Lawn, it’s an easy stop for grabbing some toasties and a bottle of wine on the way.</p>



<p><strong>Where to eat</strong>: The <a href="https://www.cardiffcityhall.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">City Hall Lawn</a> for sure. It&#8217;s one of the best spots in the city for people watching.</p>

<p>Rooted in Sicilian food culture, Khione brings a little slice of the Mediterranean to Cardiff, connecting small producers in Italy with anyone chasing an authentic taste of the region. Inside Duke Street Arcade, the team offer a clever build-your-own Italian picnic, curating picks from the deli that you love. Expect freshly made panini, cured meats, Sicilian cheeses, olives, cannoli and plenty more, all sourced straight from Italy. There are also solid vegan and gluten-free choices too, including pizza, crackers and cannoli.</p>



<p><strong>Where to eat</strong>: The grounds of <a href="https://www.cardiffcastle.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cardiff Castle</a> –&nbsp;it&#8217;ll be the perfect day out!</p>

<p>We are stretching things slightly here, as Little Pickers is based in Pontypridd, around half an hour from the capital, but it is worth the drive if you cannot pick something up on the way. Alongside their coffee shop, the team are known for creating beautifully styled grazing boxes, charcuterie boards and full grazing tables that feel almost too good to eat. In the warmer months, their weekend picker baskets and grazing lunch bowls are a real treat, packed with fresh fruit, cheese, crackers the job lot, turning a simple picnic into something a bit more special.</p>



<p><strong>Where to eat</strong>: If you&#8217;re not heading into Cardiff, just opposite Little Pickers, <a href="https://www.rctcbc.gov.uk/EN/Resident/SportsandLeisure/Parks/YnysangharadWarMemorialPark/YnysangharadWarMemorialParkPontypridd.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ynysangharad War Memorial Park</a> is a fab choice. A huge park with a lovely lido, sporting grounds, and lots more, you&#8217;ll find countless spots to hunker down.</p>

<p>There’s no official word yet on whether Mrs Potts Chocolate House in Cardiff will be bringing back its summer picnic basket for 2026, but we are quietly hopeful. The beautifully packed basket usually comes loaded with scones, mocha cookies, a strawberries and cream sandwich, cheesecake shorties, soft drinks, fresh strawberries and a pot of melted chocolate. It is basically a dream picnic for anyone with a sweet tooth.</p>



<p><strong>Where to eat</strong>: Take a short walk to <a href="https://bute-park.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bute Park</a> and explore the grounds before deciding where to set up camp. If you&#8217;re really spoiling yourself, take the <a href="https://bute-park.com/attraction/water-taxi/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Water Taxi</a> to Cardiff Bay and spend the afternoon basking in the sunshine.</p>
