Wales is having a full-on screen moment, with its towns, coastlines and national parks stepping into the spotlight as backdrops for some of the UK’s most hotly anticipated stories. From gritty crime dramas and supernatural thrillers to star-led heartwarmers, broadcasters like the BBC and Channel 4 are backing homegrown talent in a big way — serving up Welsh storytelling with serious global appeal.

Coming soon (landing 5 June) Madfabulous is a bold, flamboyant reimagining of one of the Victorian era’s most eccentric figures. With a starry cast including Rupert Everett, Callum Scott Howells and Ruby Stokes, the film brings to life the extraordinary story of Henry Paget — and trust us, it’s a wild ride.



Inspired by the lavish (and seriously unconventional) life of the 19th-century aristocrat, the film is a passion project for screenwriter Lisa Baker and BAFTA Cymru-winning director Celyn Jones, both of whom grew up on Anglesey. Filming took place across North Wales, including Caernarfon and Pwllheli, with a production base at Parc Glynllifon.



Howells steps into the shoes of the Marquess, famed for his outrageous flair — think extravagant costumes, pink poodles paraded through London and even cars customised to emit perfume. Extra? Absolutely. Boring? Never.

The BBC has greenlit Old Town Murders, a sharp-edged new crime drama from writer and creator Matthew Barry (Men Up, The Guest). Produced by Quay Street Productions, the six-part series is heading to BBC iPlayer and BBC One in partnership with BBC Cymru Wales.



Leading the cast are Mark Lewis Jones (Keeping Faith) and Steffan Rhodri (aka Dave Coaches from Gavin and Stacey), starring as DI Glyn Walsh and DS Sion Dearden. The pair play longtime friends and detectives whose careers look to be winding down — until a string of puzzling cases in the picturesque seaside town of Tenby gives them a fresh sense of purpose. No premiere date yet, but this one’s firmly on our watchlist.

Another Welsh nail biter incoming&#8230; The Witch Farm is bringing Danny Robbins’s hit podcast to the screen. Starring Gabrielle Creevy (The Guest, Black Doves) and Michael Socha (This Is England), it&#8217;s one of two major new commissions for BBC Cymru Wales this year, alongside Old Town Murders — part of a seriously strong slate of homegrown stories with global appeal. 



Based on a real-life case in the Brecon Beacons, the drama Liz and Bill Rich, who move their family into a remote farmhouse in 1989, dreaming of rural bliss&#8230; only to find themselves at the centre of one of Britain’s most chilling alleged hauntings. Think poltergeist activity, apparitions, possessions — and things that go bump in the night and draw blood.



Robbins (the mind behind Uncanny and the stage hit 2:22 &#8211; A Ghost Story) pens the four-part supernatural thriller, with filming set to begin soon in the Brecon Beacons — adding yet another atmospheric Welsh backdrop to the screen.

Over the past few weeks, hundreds of fans have flocked to Dolgellau in North Wales as filming gets underway for A Visit To Grandpa’s, starring Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs). The legend leads the upcoming film, which follows a young boy sent to spend the summer with his eccentric grandfather on a Welsh farm — only for things to take an unexpected turn. 



Based on a short story by Dylan Thomas, the production has transformed the picturesque town into a ready-made film set – with its narrow streets, indie shops and mountain backdrop all getting their moment on screen. The cast also includes Aimee-Ffion Edwards (Peaky Blinders) and Aneurin Barnard (The White Queen), with a release date still under wraps.

Filming on Deadpoint wrapped just before Christmas 2025, with the gripping new Channel 4 drama shot against the dramatic backdrop of Eryri National Park. The five-part series follows a group of Welsh climbers who stumble across a far-right faction plotting a violent act in their local mountains — expect tension, twists and plenty of cliff-edge drama (quite literally).



Created and written by debut talent Matt Hartley, the cast is led by Christine Tremarco (Adolescence), alongside Michael Socha, Callum Scott Howells (It&#8217;s A Sin and Cabaret) and Annes Elwy. Production also returned to Dolgellau (fresh from its starring role in A Visit To Grandpa’s), with local shops temporarily transformed as filming took over — another tick in the box for Wales as a go-to hotspot for major TV and film.
