<p>We love any excuse to pig out at Muddy (all in the name of research, obviously), so trust us when we say we know a thing or two about what makes the perfect afternoon tea. So dust off the lippy, get glammed up with Mum, pop those pinkies in the air, loosen the elastic waistband a smidge, and let us take you to the very best afternoon teas Wales has to offer – helping you rack up some serious brownie points while you&#8217;re at it. </p>

<p>White gloves, a gleaming silver service trolley, and whole lot of pink – this is an afternoon tea you simply can&#8217;t skip. Step into The Lady Mary Cole&#8217;s Tea Room, where 1840s sophistication meets modern indulgence in the most fabulous fashion. Expect an experience that&#8217;s theatrical and gorgeous, just like Marie Antoinette and <em>Bridgerton</em> had a very stylish baby. If you&#8217;re feeling extra generous this Mother&#8217;s Day, book Mum a blissful afternoon in the award-winning spa, and cosy up in one of the hotel&#8217;s stunning bedrooms for the night.</p>



<p>You&#8217;ll be served a selection of speciality loose leaf teas, each brewed to perfection, with tasty treats including a lemon meringue choux bun, and roast chicken and caesar salad on farmhouse loaf. The traditional afternoon tea is £50 a head, or you can include Champagne for £65. It&#8217;s an adults-first affair, but children aged 10 years and over are welcome.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bodysgallen-hall-llandudno"><a href="https://www.bodysgallen.com/wine-dine/afternoon-tea/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bodysgallen Hall</a>, Llandudno</h2>



<p>Owned by the National Trust and tucked just outside Llandudno, Bodysgallen Hall provides the perfect backdrop for a sumptuous traditional Welsh afternoon tea. Expect all the classics &#8211; delicate sandwiches, freshly baked scones and sweet treats &#8211; with the welcome addition of bara brith on the menu too &#8211; all for a good value £35. An additional £15 will add a glass of Champers to the tab. You can choose where you&#8217;d like to take your tea, but our tip? Head straight for the elegant drawing room. The house itself is full of character with wood-panelled walls and huge 17th-century fireplaces, and that rare knack of feeling both grand and homely at the same time. Afternoon tea is served Mon to Sat from 1pm – 5pm, or 3.30pm – 5pm on Sun.</p>

<p>If you’ve wandered through Victoria Park on a sunny day, you&#8217;ve probably spotted Let Them See Cake. This pastel playground of cakes and all things delicious was dreamed up by Gareth Davies and Ryan Rowe in 2020, and is so charming it even scored its own docu-series, <em>Hot Cakes</em>.</p>



<p>Their afternoon tea &#8211; served strictly on Fri and Sat at 3.30pm, and Sun at 2.30pm, costs £35 per person, and changes with the seasons. You’ll always find classics like perfectly fluffy scones laden with jam and cream, alongside playful seasonal specials. The spring menu, arriving just in time for Mother&#8217;s Day, includes treats like a peaches and cream macaron, lemon and blueberry roulade, and mini Welsh rarebit on toast. Tea lovers are in for a treat too: Bird &amp; Blend tea is served in a clever teapot that sits atop your teacup, creating the perfect (and very fun) pour.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plas-dinas-caernarfon"><a href="https://www.plasdinas.co.uk/dining/afternoon-tea/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Plas Dinas</a>, Caernarfon</h2>



<p>Set against the gorgeous backdrop of Eryri national park, Plas Dinas is the former home of Lord Snowdon, so no surprise it’s giving out five-star luxury vibes. Afternoon tea is served in your choice of the relaxed Drawing Room or more formal Dining Room so you can choose if you&#8217;re feeling cosy or going full Downton. Serve Tue – Sun from 1pm-3pm, afternoon tea is £33.95 for the signature menu or £38.95 for Snowdon’s special. With Mother’s Day falling early this year, the winter menu is still in full swing, with treats like baked ham and spiced pear sandwiches, beef short rib bonbons, bara brith madeleines, and Earl Grey panna cotta – all guaranteed to make you feel fancy without the fuss.</p>

<p>Indulge a little (or a lot) at Palé Hall, where three AA Rosettes promise an afternoon tea that’s every bit as fancy as it sounds. Expect the classics -homemade scones, elegant patisserie, and delicate finger sandwiches &#8211; all served with your favourite hot drink, just with a little extra polish. It&#8217;s priced at £40 for the full frills or just £15 if you&#8217;re simply stopping by for a quick cream tea. Set inside a jaw-droppingly beautiful Grade-II listed country retreat in the heart of Snowdonia, Palé Hall feels like the ultimate special occasion spot &#8211; and if you&#8217;re really looking to spoil Mum, why not turn it into a full weekend escape.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-parkgate-hotel-cardiff"><a href="https://www.theparkgatehotel.wales/offers/afternoon-tea/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Parkgate Hotel</a>, Cardiff</h2>



<p>Originally Cardiff’s Post Office &#8211; opened in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee &#8211; The Parkgate Hotel threw open its doors to guests in 2021 as part of The Celtic Collection, and it&#8217;s quickly become a firm city favourite. </p>



<p>Afternoon tea is served daily within the grand surrounds of the The Cwrt Lounge, costing £36 per person on weekdays and £42 at the weekend. Right in the heart of the city centre, it&#8217;s the perfect excuse to treat Mum (and yourself) to a little shopping spree before getting glammed up for tea. On the menu? Elevated classics with a Welsh twist &#8211; Halen Môn cured cucumber finger sandwiches, Welsh strawberries and cream tea, and a zesty lemon sphere. And if you&#8217;re in the mood for something stronger, the Scrumpy Spritz – a delicious mix of black tea, maple syrup, apple juice, vodka and Champagne &#8211; is basically a sparkling hug in a glass. And yes, we’ll have another, thanks.</p>

<p>Afternoon tea in a 13th-century castle? Yes m&#8217;lady, or in this case, Mama. Primarily known as a wedding venue, the fairytale-turreted and moated Hensol Castle feels like stepping straight onto a Disney set. Your afternoon tea is served in the modern-glass Atrium, or you can hire a private room for up to 12 if you&#8217;re bringing the whole Brady Bunch along. Enjoy delicious sweet treats &#8211; from chocolate crinkle cookies to brandy apply fool and white chocolate, orange and cranberry fudge.</p>



<p>Traditional afternoon tea is just £30 per person, or you can splash out on a Prosecco or Laurent Perrier upgrade. It may not be the most traditional pairing, but we&#8217;re rather partial the Welsh gin option – especially since Hensol Castle has its very own award-winning distillery. Bookings are available Fri-Sun, 12.30pm – 3.30pm.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-llangoed-hall-brecon"><a href="https://www.llangoedhall.co.uk/dining/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Llangoed Hall</a>, Brecon</h2>



<p>We&#8217;re officially jealous of anybody who lives close enough to pop in on a whim, because at just £28 a head, this afternoon tea at this historic country house hotel is an absolute steal – leaving you with plenty left over to buy Mum a little extra something nice.</p>



<p>Just nine miles west of Hay-on-Wye, Llangoed Hall has a history stretching all the way back to 560AD (though the house you see today was largely rebuilt in  Jacobean style in 1632). Afternoon tea is served between 2pm – 4pm on Sundays and you&#8217;ll need to give a couple of days&#8217; notice to secure your spot. Fashion fans will love the connection too: Welsh designer Laura Ashley once owned Llangoed Hall with her husband. In honour of that stylish legacy, you can  opt for the elegant Ashley afternoon tea, served with a delicious glass of elderflower Champagne. Cheers to that. </p>

<p>Tucked away in a peaceful glade in West Wales, Grove of Narberth is a multi-award-winning boutique retreat from the Seren Collection and home to the Michelin approved The Fernery. The hotel&#8217;s afternoon tea features a stellar lineup of smoked salmon pate and cream cheese sandwiches, seasonal cakes and warm buttermilk scones – all accompanied by your choice of tea or coffee for £40. Or, opt for the signature gin and tonic, Pembrokeshire sparkling wine, or brut réserve Champagne pairings. It is Mother&#8217;s Day after all.</p>



<p>The setting is just as dreamy as the menu. Surrounded by a pond, cherry blossom trees and the wilder Welsh countryside, it’s pure magic with tweeting birds and wildflowers swishing in the wind. Afernoon tea is available Thurs to Sun, 2.30pm – 4pm.</p>
