<p>If your wellness bingo card for 2026 includes cold plunges, magnesium sprays and something involving mushrooms, allow us to add another contender: seaweed baths. Yes, the slippery green stuff you normally step over on the beach while pretending you’re not slightly worried about what’s underneath it.</p>

<p>Seaweed soaking is suddenly everywhere in the wellbeing world. Scotland and Ireland have long been the headline acts – a sort of Celtic spa rivalry with bragging rights attached – but Wales has been quietly plotting its own revival. And, frankly, it’s about time. The practice itself is hardly new. People have been bathing in seaweed for&nbsp;thousands of years, using it as a natural remedy for sore joints, skin complaints and general exhaustion. Victorian seaside towns even had dedicated seaweed bathhouses where visitors would soak their way back to health after a brisk constitutional on the promenade.</p>



<p>Fast forward to today and the trend is back, minus the corsets and with considerably better views. Leading the Welsh charge is&nbsp;Halen Môn, the much-loved family-run sea salt producer on the Isle of Anglesey. Known to chefs for its award-winning salt, the brand has quietly expanded into wellbeing with an outdoor seaweed bathing experience overlooking the Menai Strait. The premise is simple:&nbsp;45 minutes in warm mineral-rich water, a generous armful of seaweed and nothing much to do except relax. It’s indulgent, slightly eccentric and very, very Welsh.</p>

<p>Seaweed might look like beach debris but it’s a nutritional powerhouse for the skin. Marine algae are packed with minerals, antioxidants and naturally occurring compounds that can benefit both skin and body. One of the big players is&nbsp;polysaccharides, natural sugars that help draw moisture into the skin and lock it there, leaving it hydrated and soft.</p>



<p>Seaweed also contains&nbsp;polyphenols, antioxidants that help protect skin cells from environmental stressors like pollution and UV exposure. In other words, they act as a sort of underwater armour for your complexion. Certain brown seaweeds, including&nbsp;<em>fucus serratus</em>, have even been linked to&nbsp;stimulating collagen production, which can help support firmer skin and soften the appearance of fine lines.</p>



<p>Then there are the soothing compounds. Seaweed contains natural anti-inflammatory ingredients such as&nbsp;fucoidan and phlorotannins, which may help calm redness and irritation. That’s why seaweed bathing has traditionally been recommended for conditions like eczema, psoriasis and rosacea.</p>



<p>When seaweed is placed in warm water – usually around&nbsp;40°C&nbsp;– it releases mineral-rich oils into the bath. The warmth opens the pores and increases circulation, helping the skin absorb those nutrients more effectively. The water develops a silky texture that feels surprisingly luxurious. Add in a hefty dose of vitamins&nbsp;A, B, C, D, E and K, and you’ve got a soak that leaves skin looking rather glowing and annoyingly healthy.</p>



<p>And then there’s the mental side of things. Warm water immersion naturally lowers stress levels and relaxes the nervous system. Combine that with sea air, big skies and a few quiet moments without your phone and you’ve basically got nature’s version of a spa reset.</p>

<p>If you fancy testing the trend yourself (and let’s, be honest, you probably do now),&nbsp;Anglesey is the place to go. At&nbsp;Halen Môn’s <a href="https://www.halenmon.com/product/seaweed-baths/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Saltcote</a>, eight upcycled barrels sit outdoors overlooking the Menai Strait, each filled with beautifully warm distilled water and fresh organic seaweed.</p>



<p>The baths first launched in&nbsp;2023 as Wales’ first seaweed soak detox, quietly ahead of the current wellness curve. After a refurbishment, they reopened in 2025 with a set-up that is blissfully simple: outdoor soaking tubs, sweeping views across Snowdonia and the kind of calm you can’t really manufacture indoors.</p>



<p>The idea came from a practical place. During the sea salt harvesting process, Halen Môn produces large quantities of ultra-pure water as a by-product. Rather than waste it, the team looked for ways to reuse it and seaweed bathing turned out to be the perfect solution.</p>



<p>The experience itself is refreshingly low-key. Guests arrive, choose between two natural bath salts and then head to the changing rooms to slip into their cosi before stepping outside to their personal barrel of warm water.</p>

<p>Once you’re settled in, fresh seaweed is added to the bath. As it slowly unfurls, it releases those mineral-rich oils into the water, turning the soak into a silky, ocean-infused skin treatment.</p>



<p>You sit there for about&nbsp;45 minutes, surrounded by sea air, mountain views and the gentle slosh of water. There are&nbsp;no showers afterwards, which is deliberate. The nourishing oils are meant to stay on your skin so they can keep doing their thing long after you’ve climbed out. And yes, your hair might smell faintly like the seaside afterwards. Yes, you may feel slightly like a mermaid who’s had a long spa day. But soft skin, calmer nerves and a soak with one of the best views in Wales? That’s a wellbeing trend we can get behind.</p>
